Ebadot Hossain appealing for a wicket. His outstanding performance in the Test helped Bangladesh rank five with historic win over New Zealand

Maiden Win for Bangladesh against New Zealand on Kiwi’s Soil

The Tigers have made history by beating New Zealand on their soil for the first time. Successively, Bangladesh ranked five with this historic win over New Zealand. The team led by Mominul Haque picked up an 8-wicket win in the first Test of the two-match series with a superb performance by Ebadot Hossain.

On the fifth and final day, New Zealand did not last long against the bowling of Ebadot Hossain and Taskin Ahmed. They were all out for just 169. New Zealand set a winning target of 40 runs for Bangladesh. And Bangladesh bagged those runs by losing 2 wickets in 16.5 overs. This historic win points to a turning point of Bangladesh cricket struggling in any format of cricket in the recent past.

New Zealand, The Test Champion

New Zealand won the very first title of the Test Championship in June last year. The Kiwis beat Virat Kohli‘s India by 8 wickets to clinch the title in the final match at Southampton, England. Bangladesh finished at the bottom of the tournament. The team, which could not see any victory in the first Test championship event, just defeated Test champions New Zealand. Moreover, that’s on their soil. Yes, it sounds unbelievable but that’s true. With this win, Bangladesh took a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. Also, it added a valuable 12 points next to their name.

ICC World Test Championship (2021-2023) Standings

Bangladesh have moved up to number five in the points list of Test championship. They are topped only by Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India. West Indies, New Zealand, England are now below Bangladesh. South Africa are yet to open the points account. Even India have 53 points, they ranked number four based on the percentage of wins (63.09%). Australia top the table with 36 points and Sri Lanka sit on second position with 24 points – both have 100 percent winning record so far in the ongoing Test Championship.
