St Kitts won maiden CPL title in a last ball thriller in the final of CPLT20 2021 at Warner Park Sporting Complex in Basseterre, St. Kitts, St. Kitts and Nevis, on September 15, 2021. The host beat St Lucia Kings by reaching a target of 160 runs in the final ball of the match.
Maiden CPL title for St Kitts
Chris Gayle completely failed with the bat. Also, in-form Evin Lewis could not give the team confidence. Furthermore, captain Dwayne Bravo also appeared pale in the final. Nevertheless, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots won the exciting Caribbean Premier League title clash. They beat St Lucia Kings in a last ball thriller to lift the CPL trophy for the first time.
St Lucia Innings
St Lucia stepped into the field without Du Plessis in the final. In absence of Du Plessis, Andre Fletcher led the team instead. Batted first, St Lucia Kings scored 159 for 7 in the stipulated 20 overs. Rahkeem Cornwall scored 43, Roston Chase 43, Keemo Paul 39, Fletcher 11 and Tim David 10. Naseem Shah and Fawad Ahmed took 2 wickets each. In addition, Fabian Allen, Dominic Drakes and Jon-Russ Jaggesars claimed 1 wicket each.
Early disaster of St Kitts
In reply to St Lucia’s innings, St Kitts fell in a batting disaster early on. Gayle was dismissed before opening his account. Another opener Lewis returned to the dressing room after scoring just 6 runs. However, Joshua Da Silva scored 37 and Sherfane Rutherford 25 runs to put the team in the winning streak. Bravo was dismissed for 8 runs while Allen made an effective contribution of 20 runs to his team’s successful chase of the target.
Drakes sizzled and St Kitts won maiden CPL title in a last ball thriller
Drakes took a single off the last ball of the match to give St Kitts the victory. He remained unbeaten on 48 off 24 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes. The Patriots picked up the required 160 runs to win for 7 wickets in 20 overs. They won the final match by a margin of 3 wickets. Drakes was the man of the match while Roston Chase has been named the best cricketer in the series.
